I was extremely impressed with Jon Jones long before last night's total domination of Vladimir Matyushenko. Jones entered the UFC with a 7-0 record. In his first fight in the UFC he dominated Stephan Bonnar with a unanimous decision victory. What was so impressive about this victory was the ease with which he tossed Bonnar around. It struck me that NOBODY had handled Stephan Bonnar like that! Jones fight with Bonnar took place on January 31 of 2009. Former UFC Lightheavyweight champion Forrest Griffin defeated Stephan Bonnar twice via decision but both of those fights were close battles with Bonnar hanging tough. In the case of Jones Stephan Bonnar was manhandled. Next Jones finished Jake O'Brien via guillotine choke. While not a top contender O'Brien sports an impressive 13-4 record with most of his losses coming to heavyweights. In fact the only other light heavyweight with a win over O'Brien is Gerard Mousasi. In "Bones" Jones next encounter he would suffer the only "loss" of his career as he manhandled Matt "The Hammer" Hamill. Hamill has always been thought of as one of the best wrestlers in the light heavyweight division and Jones took him down without breaking a sweat. Due to an illegal elbow which re-arranged Hamill's face Jones was disqualified at 4:14 of the very first round in a fight Jon dominated. Jones' next fight pitted him against Brandon "The Truth" Vera. Again prior to this fight NOBODY had ever manhandled Brandon Vera. Vera is not undefeated however his last fight before Jon Jones was against the legendary Randy Couture in which Couture won a close decision victory. In contrast Jon Jones completely annihilated Vera winning by TKO due to elbow strikes at 3:19 of the first round. That brings us to last night's encounter against mma veteran and former IFL champion Vladimir Matyushenko. Jones made the 13 year veteran look like an amateur as he took the former SOVIET NATIONAL WRESTLING CHAMPION down with ease and finished him off with a cross body ride and elbow strikes at 1:52 of the VERY FIRST ROUND!
When it comes to granting Jones a title shot against Shogun Rua the only question I have for Joe Silva and the UFC is what are you waiting for? I'm a big Brock Lesnar fan and Lesnar was granted a title shot after only two fights in the UFC and an overall record of 2-1! Lesnar proved he deserved the opportunity but in contrast Jones was 7-0, to Lesnar's 1-0 prior to arriving in the UFC. You can't possibly make the argument that Lesnar faced stiffer competition because Lesnar's only win in the UFC prior to facing Couture was over Heath Herring, a man Jake O'Brien defeated! So you have to ask yourself why the UFC is moving so slowly with Jon Jones. Perhaps it's because Jones' trainer Greg Jackson said he "wants to take it slow" with Jones as he told Sherdog after the fight. Perhaps it's because the light heavyweight talent pool is deep. Either way it is my opinion that Jones deserves a shot at Rua NOW. Dana White is always saying he wants entertaining fights and there are few fighters as entertaining and dominant as Jon "Bones" Jones. My message to the UFC is give Jones a title fight and watch the money pour in!
